When trying to import your WordPress.com site to your self-hosted WordPress do you get the following error: This does not appear to be a WXR file, missing/invalid WXR version number?
Why Did this Happen?
This error is typical when you try to import a zipped file. The WordPress importer as of 08/30/2018 is unable to deal with zipped files.
You most likely exported the file from WordPress.com’s Calypso interface or Calypso for desktop with a self-hosted WordPress site. Calypso has a new feature where it zips the export, but unfortunately, the WordPress importer hasn’t been updated to handle zipped files.
How do I Fix this?
The fix is actually really simple. You just need to unzip the export and upload it that way. You can unzip the export by double-clicking on it or right-clicking and selecting Extract.
Another option is to use WordPress admin (original way) to create the export since it will not zip the file.
